In order to access your coins stored on your Ledger device, you need to connect to the interactive app — the Ledger Live app.

The issue we will be looking to solve today regards the Ledger Live app on Linux not recognizing the device. If this is something that has frustrated you for a while, it is time to sort it out!

Solution

Make sure you are using the latest version of Ledger Live.

Typically, when Ledger Live doesn’t recognize the device, there are connectivity problems. You can systematically run over these to see if your issue is caused by any of them.

  1. Close other applications (Ledger apps, crypto wallets, Geth, Parity, Mist, Bitcoin Core, etc).
  2. Turn OFF VPN and anti-virus temporarily. If that works, make sure to whitelist Ledger Live.
  3. Change the USB cable if possible. Try removing any dongles or docks you’re using.
  4. Try different USB ports.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Try another computer.

If neither of these fixes works, the problem lies with your system. On Linux, please, make sure that you add the udev rules. Without it, your Ledger Live won’t be able to recognize your device.

Add the udev rules

Step 1: Enter the following command to automatically add the rules and reload udev:

  • wget -q -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LedgerHQ/udev-rules/master/add_udev_rules.sh | sudo bash

Step 2: Retry connecting your Ledger Nano S with Ledger Live.

Conclusion

While some technical issues can sometimes be resolved using common fixes, some technical problems arise only on certain systems. Use today’s tutorial to guide you towards a solution. If you find that nothing helped, please contact the Ledger support team right away, as they might be able to advise on an alternative solution.
